Why train with the Thurrock Teaching Schools Alliance?
Our Alliance has fully-trained and experienced Mentors in all subjects who are given time to support the trainees, whatever the route, into teacher training. There is a dedicated programme of Professional Studies, which is delivered by experienced colleagues each Monday, enhancing trainees’ theoretical knowledge and enabling them to put this knowledge into practice.
St Clere’s has been a very successful Initial Teacher Training (ITT) provider since 2004 and has an excellent success record that has enabled many candidates to successfully complete the ITT programme with the majority of trainees being good or outstanding. A large number of these trainees have been employed by the school and have gone on to start our Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT)programme.

The Alliance is able to call on the experience of a number of staff who work across Essex schools to raise attainment and levels of learning and teaching. This includes Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs).

St Clere’s School acts as a hub school for the School Direct Programme and trainees are recruited and placed in other secondary schools across Thurrock and Basildon. HCUK by TES Global will award Qualified Teacher Status and will award a PGCE (the latter will be accredited through HCUK’s partnership with UEL) for secondary route trainees.
Routes and recruitment:
School Direct offers both a fee-funded and a salaried path. The salaried path is an employment-based route for high quality graduates with three or more years’ career experience. The trainee will be employed as an unqualified teacher for the duration of their training and receive a salary. The salary is expected to reflect subject priorities with Physics, Maths, Chemistry, MFL and Computing attracting the higher salaries. The recruitment process commences with our Teacher Recruitment Information Event which takes place in the autumn term, when all routes into teaching are represented. All ITT applicants must have English and Mathematics at GCSE Grade C or above (as well a grade C or above for Science for Primary Education trainees). The expectation is that successful candidates will have spent at least three days working in a School on a voluntary basis and will at some stage be asked to teach part of a lesson so that we can judge potential.
