Studying a Modern Foreign language, such as French, enables students to become global citizens. They appreciate and understand the culture of different countries and societies by learning to communicate and comprehend the spoken and written language. They work across a diverse range of topics like family, free time, the world of education and work and the international and global dimension. Proficiency in a Modern Foreign Language opens doors to a wider range of employment opportunities in sectors such as business, finance, tourism and education.

The syllabus focuses on developing the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Listening: skills of listening for gist and information in French.
Speaking: confidence to give information about particular topics in French for different purposes and audiences.
Reading: skills of reading for gist and extracting information from French texts.
Writing: confidence to write creatively an in-depth about certain topics in French.

Term 1: 
(i) Friends and family, family relationships, going out, the person I admire, revision of the present, past and near future tenses
(ii) Sport and leisure, using technology, reading, music, Tv and film

Term 2:
Describing daily routine, shopping for clothes, festivals and traditions, celebrations

Term 3:
Town and directions, regions of France, tourist information, advantages and disadvantages of local area, the future tense, si clauses

Year 11

Term 1:
(i) Town and directions, regions of France, tourist information, advantages and disadvantages of the local area, the future tense, si clauses
(ii) Holidays, the conditional tense, staying in a hotel, eating in a restaurant, travelling, buying souvenirs, holiday disasters

Term 2:
(i) Jobs, work and career choices, future plans,the role of foreign languages, applying for jobs, the comparative and superlative, the present subjunctive, verbs followed by prepositions
(ii) Global problems, protecting the environment, ethical shopping, volunteering, large events, the passive voice
